Suspicious Activity
March 2: A female student reported that her car, parked near Helaman Halls, had been picked up and moved into two parking stalls.
Feb. 26: Three juveniles were reported attempting to pick up and move a parked car at Wymount Terrace. They were gone when police arrived.
Feb. 26: Police received a call from a resident of Taylor Hall who had been approached by a freelance member of the media. The man was filming student responses to questions about the LDS faith and wanted to put the film on MTV. The man said he was unaware of campus filming restrictions and left.
Theft By Deception
March 2: A female student reported magazine solicitors knocked on her door at Wyview Park on Feb. 18 and told her they were trying to earn points to go on a cruise. The men said that if she wrote a check for a magazine subscription, they would get the points and she could cancel the check the next day. The female wrote a check for $213 to “Face to Face Technologies.” She called to cancel the check the next day, but found the check had already been cashed.
Vehicle-Bicycle Accident
Feb. 26: A student on a bicycle was hit by a car making a right turn from 1430 North to 450 East The bicyclist was scratched and bruised. The driver of the car, a female visitor to campus, was cited for failing to yield the right of way.
Theft
Feb. 27: A student reported his unlocked bike had been stolen from a bike rack near Stover Hall. The bike is valued at $200.
Feb. 26: Three students reported their wallets stolen after playing an intramural basketball game in the Richards Building. The victims had placed their wallets and car keys by the wall but found their wallets missing after the game. Stolen items included a cell phone valued at $100, $170 in cash, driver’s licenses and credit cards.
Criminal Mischief
Feb. 28: A driver called to report that her car had been hit by water balloons being thrown off the overpass on East Campus Drive. There was no damage to the car.
Dog Leash Problem
Feb. 27: An elderly man was walking with two Chihuahuas when one of them got loose and began running around the Talmage Building. Police were unable to find the dog.
Trespassing
Feb. 25: A Wymount Terrace resident called police to report that two men were behind building 12C. The caller thought the men might be homeless. Police responded and found the men were grounds employees.
Disorderly Conduct
Feb. 25: A police officer was responding to a call by driving his police car on the sidewalk by the JFSB. The officer asked a student to move so the car could safely pass, but the student refused. When the officer got out of the car, the student refused to identify himself. The student was arrested and cited for failure to disclose his identification to police, disorderly conduct and interference with police activity.
Safety tip from University Police Lt. Arnold Lemmon: The same traffic laws apply to bicycles and vehicles. It is illegal and unsafe for bicyclists to ride against traffic. Anyone involved in an accident should report it to police right away.
