Finding fashion in Springtime

The beauty of colorful flowers that present a happy greeting on a warm sunny day signals the start of spring fashion.

“The trends for spring are bright colors,” said Carol Philips, owner of Whimsy Clothing, with four locations in Utah. “Everything is in hot color. Hot pink and bright apple greens make fun pops to basics like denim.”

Philips said trends for spring each year include florals but there has been a change in the size of floral patterns printed for this spring.

“In the past, the florals have been smaller,” Philips said. “However, this year, they are bigger and bolder and people are becoming more comfortable wearing them.”

Jana Lindblom, a senior from Laguna Beach, Calif., who has worked in the fashion industry for six years, advocated the Bohemian look, consisting of flowers and earthy tones, flowy tops, feather accents, gladiator sandals and headbands.

“This look has an easy, thrown together look that shows a lot of personality,” Lindblom said.

With each season comes different trends and some people may feel the need to change their whole wardrobe to be trendy.

“Let’s be honest, trends change every six weeks,” Lindblom said. “If you try to keep up with them, you’ll be exhausted and broke.”

Lindblom has two pieces of advice for students looking to update their wardrobe.

The first is to find things that can be matched with different pieces of clothing to create multiple styles such as white capris, white sundresses and denim crops. Sundresses can be dressed up with heels and matching jewelry or dressed down with more casual layers and flats, she said.

The second is to dress for your body type.

“Holding on to a trend that looks bad on your body type will not do you any favors,” Lindblom said. “Instead, use a couple classic pieces that flatter your body and you’re pretty much guaranteed to look good. Also, you can be modest and attractive.”

Philips suggested students on a budget purchase accessories and basics and add them to things they already own.

“Adding a bright fuchsia, yellow or green camisole under a jacket or a fun, bright-colored floral necklace is an easy way to update on a budget,” she said. “Also, adding fun-colored, bright shoes to jeans and a white tee is affordable and again, fun.”
